So, for those of you that don't are as disconnected from entertainment news as I am, apparently Disney can't keep their greasy mitts off our childhood, thankfully an appropriate response has been prepared. Thanks to Dork Tower, and the Simpsons.

*sigh*

I did a paper a while back utterly bashing the Tao of Pooh book by using Christopher Robin as a key figure to put that stupid bear in his place. Chris was the much needed anchor for the rest of the addleminded crew, and replacing him with some young tart is comparable to replacing Kermit as the head figure in the Muppet Show remake a few years ago. It's just not right.

Feh!!

I always thought it was so cool to see a little boy playing imagination games with animal friends (instead of just shooting them) that it seems like to add a girl (with a bike helmet, thank you 21st century) makes it Dora the Explorer in the Thousand Acre Wood. Next I think we should make Robin Hood a girl in roller blades, and Nottingham should be LazyTown.

In truth, the weirdest thing about Disney today is that they have so much more competition, yet the stuff that comes out of there is so much worse. Sure, a lot of old Disney stuff is tinged with lovely racism, sexism, and ugliness, but so was the source material, and working through that can be useful so long as it's framed correctly. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi--these were classic movies. Then you've got Alladin which was good but relied on Robin Williams to keep the pace of the story up, which shows a bit of weakness in the story itself (imagine trying to sit through that if the genii were just mediocre--it would be a snooze-fest!).

So how is it that the glut of children's entertainment that's out there now has actually pushed Disney further out of touch from quality kids entertainment? Perhaps the problem is that they want kids to tell them what they want. In my opinion, even adults can't be trusted to tell anyone what they really want--as proof, I offer up my shrug at being asked by Rhonda what I want for Christmas this year.

Feh and double-feh.

Same thing happened to Disney that happened to Ford and GM. They don't remember how to deal with serious competition and think that appeals to nostalgia are enough to give them a fighting chance in today's marketplace. But who gets excited when they see Mickey Mouse these days??

Most telling of all was the last thought in the article. Did they not want to injure precious memories, timeless characters, a rich universe from which to tell stories? NO! They didn't want to injure...wait for it... THE FRANCHISE: "The last thing we want to be is the ones who brought the franchise down."

Well thank you Disney for being ever so careful with the earnings potential that is the Thousand Acre Wood. How very big of you. I was quite concerned and can now breath easier. I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on more money from the already one billion dollars/year FRANCHISE that is Pooh. Thanks for watching over the important stuff so carefully.

With Deepest Gratitude,
FEH

Exactly! It's what made me maddest about the Pixar/Disney/hand animation thing. DIsney assumed that the reason that their last few hand-animated features tanked because they were CG. Balony. They tanked because they forgot that what matters is the story. Pixar makes beautifully animated films, but, they're window dressing on great *stories.* The method matters not.

FEH, indeed.

Oh. And I assume you've seen Neil Gaiman's response on that feed?

As a Disney shareholder my response to that is thus. Give me control of my damn shares so I can sell them off and be done with this farce.

the important question here
