1. Last night I dreamt an entire episode of Stargate: SG-1 in which Neil Patrick Harris was killed by an IED in a cliffhanger ending.

b. Does anyone have any advice about VOIP services? It is getting to be time to start figuring that out since we'd like to port our home number over on Sept. 1. but are looking to have the primary number be Scottish. Vonage looks like it will best suit our needs but I feel like I saw some bad stuff regarding them lately.

III. Waking up at 5 am sucks.

four. I am enjoying the Adultswim EP chocolate swim but I am annoyed that the download every track in a .zip file apparently means we'll give you a 24 minute track rather than an archive containing all six tracks. WTF?

feeyive, beyoetch! Only three more HP books on CD to dump to iTunes.

six. July will be people coming to visit us month: Hooray!

Unlucky Seven. It is unlikely that I will acquire the funds needed for the DSLR by July 15 which means I will not get the $100 rebate. Sadness.

Hey! You beat me to the HP-punch. My sister wanted me to rip them for her, and I've not had the time. Good for you.

I promise I will send you cookbook stuff tonight. My busy-ness is no real excuse.

My company provides a VoIP service, optionally with UK origination (a +44 call number). We can even prepare and ship you a VoIP handset if you like. The account can be recharged online by credit card. Check the rates on the site; perhaps they meet your need.

Could we port our current home phone or get a new US phone number to tie into it as well? (So we have a local scottish number and US number.) This may or may not be a deal breaker for Sar as we look into it...

You may be able to forward your home number, but that would be up to some service provided by your phone company, and probably costs money. As someone who does move and change details a lot, it's not that hard to distribute the new number to family and creditors. :)

The number wouldn't be local Scottish, it would be a local London number. You will probably get a real phone in Aberdeen anyway; it's impossible to have DSL without one. In my opinion, the purpose of a VoIP phone is cheap international calling, not to serve as a convergence communication device. Phones in the UK are not nearly so flexible or as well-managed as in the US. That's saying a lot. For example, numbers are tied to your locality, so moving to a different address means a new number, or a HUGE hassle, or both.

Thanks, that's good to know!

Is there a recommended DSL/Broadband provider that covers the whole UK? Or will be looking at various local outfits?

I'm pretty sure BT covers all of the UK, yes. It's what's left of the old phone monopoly. There are a number of 3rd-party providers that offer services on their lines, and BT is required to sell to them. What that means is that you are the mercy of TWO unhelpful and worthless corporations instead of one.

It takes a few weeks to get phone and DSL sorted at an address, and if the service has been terminated at that location for more than a few weeks, it may be impossible to get it again in a reasonable period of time (years). If you have a place already picked out, contact your person there and ask them if they will leave phone and DSL functioning until you arrive so you can change it to your ownership.
