It's good practice to make art just for the fun of it so I will be participating in Illustration Fridays from now on. This weeks theme was "wind." Here is my submission a la Illustrator:



They'll be archived and hosted over at acid tongue (which by the way is officially re-launched now that it is rebuilt) in the Illustration gallery.

This is mouse work. The tablet may end up waiting a while, the size I want seems to be a bit prohibitive right now (8.5x11 inches) so it's in the wishlist, especially since I haven't actually played with one yet. I'd hate to blow all that cash and then find that it's just not something I'd want to use (even though I am pretty sure it is).

I, for one, would welcome any comments you have about Illustrator, seeing as I know utterly nothing and so find playing with it frustrating in the extreme.

Illustrator is pretty nifty but it took me a while (plus a class) before it really clicked for me. The exercise that helped me the most was using Illustrator to create a "clena" version of client logo off a scan from a fax. I love being able to make stuff that is infintely scaleable. However if I were to starting with a pencil drawing that I intended to scan I would still end up in photoshop (until I wanted to add type anyway). There is a lot that illustrator can do that I know I am just not utilizing. For this I had a quick concept sketch and then I just started building shapes...

With the tablet I believe you can use it more like a sketchpad but I'd have to play with it to see what that did for me personally.

Are you using an Intuos or Graphire tablet and what size is it? Becuase after looking some more there is a drastic price difference between the two and I may be able to manage a graphire a lot sooner that the Intuos...

She's got the Intuos (I'm 99% it's a 4x5) - but since she uses it in Photoshop, having the pen tilt feature I'd think is a HUGE bonus there... especially when using it as a "brush"

Oh yes indeedy. The pressure and tilt features are what make a tablet worth it— we use them at work (I've got a HUGE one) and it is so nice to have the variable strength.

Incidentally, I've used Illustrator for exactly one project, and that one was paid. It's very very little on the circle to the left of the name on the storefront.

Yes, I am very pleased.
