Incoherent ramblings about spirituality, the pope and 'those damn hippies' tend not to foster any sort of discussion.

But still makes me giggle so I guess I'm not complaining...

Not necessarily. The problem is that some posts take longer to formulate a useful reply than others.

The more banal the topic, the more likely it is that people will feel comfortable dropping a single sentence in reply...

I intend to make a reply to your earlier posting, but 1) it's Monday and I have to write code first, and 2) I'm a big lame-ass.

That's true. I mean it took me a minimum of a week to get that post written (maybe longer). I think in some ways I am spoiled because I read a few other journals/blogs were people rush to hurl their 2 cents at even the most innocuous of statements. And 2) it was really incoherent.

eh...

as an atheist I just didn't have anything to say...that sounds like a cop-out but it's true. I didn't think I could give any decent advice or commentage except maybe a "go team"...shitty

Surely you have a reason to not believe/participate in any sort of spiritual endeavor? I think atheist should be just aas involved. Granted I'm pretty sure the closest I'll come is agnosticism but I think the point of view can be refreshing and clarifying especially when up next to the sometimes fervrent beliefs of others...

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] dr_tectonic. I actually spent some time driving home thinking about what I wanted to say in response. I have a lot of thoughts on the subject and wanted to narrow them down before I replied.

OMG!!!! Does this make me, like, a total livejoural geek or something? I mean, I'm, like, totally not a livejournal geek or anything. Right? RIGHT?

You worried about being a LJ geek? I thought once you got one geek lable the rest are like icing. I mean we were Theater Majors there is no hope for us. And of course the thoughtful response is more desired, certainly more than "What about Zoastriaism? Ihear their pretty cool." But it would have been funny.

And as for your obviously lame chaplain-type friend who should just be hoppingly able to give you all sorts of wonderful feedback and encouragement and suggestions and... Anyway, I'm with Beemer on the trying to formulate a coherent answer blog-style. I'm also finding that as I do that, there is some awkwardness to trying to do chaplain-y type things in this format rather than face-to-face. 'Kay, enough with the excuses. I'd love to explore this with you and I look forward to where it will take you. Feeling like we're swimming aimlessly in boundary-less waters with no bottom is a very uncomfortable way to do life. Frameworks help with this. Preliminarily I guess I'd just offer two (probably unnecessary) reminders for your search: 1) every belief system/framework (and their various "flavors") has some level of dogma (always in that word's most neutral definition and very often in it's negative connotations)- finding the essential tenets of a belief system under the additional layers of negative dogma will let you decide whether or not it resonates with you in spite of that which has been added (example -from Christianity since that is where I land- Is the position of women an essential tenet of the Christian faith? There is a great deal of historical movement in the position of women in the Bible; from Levitical laws to prophetesses to wealthy businesswomen - therefor, it couldn't be essential, no matter how much some might want to make it so) and on a related note 2)don't let followers of any particular belief system run you off from it if it connects with you. I have a friend who is seeking to be a female sensei

I have a friend who is seeking to be a female sensei<sp?>(priest? I dunno exactly) in her particular flavor of Buddhism. She is one of two caucasian females on the road to the highest level of ordination and the only one in the US. She has experienced significant resistance from those over her, but she keeps on. I admire her greatly. Systems (and the people in them) are natural ways of organizing, unavoidable and are generally good, but do become difficult as they (i.e. the people in them) try to differentiate, clarify and self-perpetuate.
I hope that made at least a little sense...
Blessings as you seek.

Oh yeah...

Example chaplain-y type question: What is it that has prompted you to look at this area of your life at this particular time?
