Weekend Roundup
27 September 2004 12:06In an effort to remain more consistent in posting I bring you a summary of minutiae from the weekend:
Not too much to report really. Since little Rona tends to leave both of us pretty tired the exciting bits of Friday consisted of picking up Astonishing X-Men #5 (Mmmm, Joss Whedon-licious, and, for those of you don’t know, he’s been put at the helm of X3: YAY!) on the way home, eating and generally lounging about. There was also arguing with conservative aquantaince #43 about whether or not we can ever address social inequities that seem simply to be part of human existence. (It makes me sad that generally reasonable people can convince themselves of the most dumb ass shit: “We should do away with welfare because a system of relief to the poor and underpriviledged will ALWAYS be abused,” remember: deep breaths, deep breathes make twitching stop.)
Saturday was morning Rona time. She’s already got incredible control/strength in her neck and occasionally vocalizes in manner that is not a) a cute newborn baby giggle or b) the piercing wail of the disposed, cursed to spend eternity with their bowels filled with red hot coals—have I mentioned her piercing voice before? Saturday afternoon I went to Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow which was appropriately pulpy and cool looking. The only thing lacking (in my mind) was a newsreel and a cartoon short. The movie was gorgeous looking (and it should be I counted approximately 9 visual effects companies in the credits) and it had flying airstrips! I am a sucker for planes and flying airstrips. The ultimate film for me currently would be a live action adaptation of Miyazaki’s Nausicaa (I know there was the anime but I’d like to see the entire uncut story in series on the screen, not the pared down to one movie synopsis that Warriors of Wind was/is—but it is still good, and it’s our good friend Hiyao!) I was going to volunteer and work the house at CSz on Saturday night (and attempt to show off the baby) but we were tired and watched television instead. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Jeffrey and it was very cool to watch and see some people that I didn’t recognize when it I saw it originally but now are almost instantly recongnizeable. Even if one proves me a nerd.
Sunday morning was church-skippin’ errand time where we try and go and buy the baby stuff that all of sudden we cannot live without&trade. Yesterday's items: one of those baby carrier/slings and (once we saw them in the store) a mirror so we can actually see Rona in the back seat while driving. A nap and then Lutheran class since St. Mark’s is probably going to be the family church (a good compromise between my Catholic liturgy sensibilities and Sara’s need to be in a church that is not Catholic.) Actually made me feel better. Pastor Jim pointed out some very good things about Lutherans: founded on rebellion and the necessity to question authority, and apparently good ol’ Martin Luther used beer drinking songs as for the hymns originally. Other things that made me feel good was that the Lutheran church is (officially) for the GLT(BXPRD maybe there are too many letters for this community, let’s just say alternate genders/sexualities) community. Pastor Jim also asked what Jesus had to say about abortion and gay marriage issues and then proceeded to say “Nothing, it’s not in there,” which also makes me feel good. They are a moderate community that really seems geared towards thoughtful reflection on their faith and I think that while I may not always agree with everything that comes from the pulpit I am not worried that they’ll ever try to ram dogma as Truth down my daughter’s throat. Sadly we didn't get to learn the handshake though.
I also found books at the store on Sunday, I picked up River of Blue Fire by Tad Williams because I MUST finish the damn story now that I have started it. I finished the first book, City of Golden Shadow, earlier in the week and discovered that the 4 book series was just the only readable way he could publish his one massive work. I can’t stand the cliffhangers so much, they drive me some crazy. Anyway the first novel was quite nice: good characters and interesting plot development, it’s a little sprawling in scope and I found that I had a little difficulty keeping track of who was who, especially when it some of the characters had multiple personas. Any lingering confusion I had was quickly cleared up by the 4 page synopsis at the beginning of the second novel (along with an apology for the abrupt ending.) I also found The Art of Just Sitting while at the local bookstore so that was nice too.
Rona and I completed our first joint art project Sunday night as well, taking impressions of her hands and feet in a plaster substitute that felt kind of like Floam but slightly less granular.
