Odyssey Youth Center seeks a dynamic community organizer for our growing GLBTQ youth center. Odyssey works with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and their allies to provide a safe place, education and advocacy to promote positive growth and self-empowerment. Our center is located in Spokane, WA and is the only GLBTQ youth center east of the Cascade Mountains.
Position Title: Community Organizer
Status: 35 hours a week; flexible hours; including evening and weekend work.
Responsible To: Executive Director
Position Summary: Responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing Odyssey Youth Center’s social justice/activism programs. Represents OYC locally, regionally and nationally and works collaboratively with community agencies to develop youth leaders and promote positive youth development.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Plan, implement and maintain OYC’s leadership and social justice/activist programs including but not limited to Odyssey Out Loud.
a. Research and design curriculum.
b. Facilitate skill-building workshops with an emphasis on understanding oppression and power analysis. Organize and mobilize youth driven campaigns.
c. Mentor and supervise youth interns.
d. Ensure the accurate, timely collection and reporting of program statistics needed for planning monitoring and evaluating the programs and activities.
2. Work in the community to develop and deliver education and training focusing on LGBTQ issues, reproductive rights and comprehensive sexuality education.
a. Coordinate a speaker’s bureau of youth willing to share their personal stories with the media, policy makers and the community.
b. Recruit, train and transport youth to speaking events.
3. Act as a community liaison and resource for LGBTQ youth related issues.
a. Participate in community coalitions, committees and associations that will further the mission of OYC.
b. Act as a resource for professional and community members seeking information.
c. Develop and maintain resource materials for youth referrals.
4. Open, close and staff OYC as scheduled.
a. Ensure that group guidelines are followed and that group members meet age criteria and maintain respectful behavior towards other in the group.
b. Monitor site to ensure that only authorized adults are on the premises and supervise all on site volunteers.
c. Facilitate peer support groups as scheduled.
d. Provide mentorship and referrals for youth during drop-in hours.
5. Assist the Executive Director with Odyssey Youth Center special events and fund development. Other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills and Experience Desired:
Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required. Experience working with sexual minorities, racial and or ethnic minorities, poverty and higher-risk populations highly preferred. Knowledge of LGBTQ youth issues desirable. Excellent presentation skills, program design and communication skills (oral and written) required. Experience and comfort working with multiple tasks with limited resources. Strong organizational skills required. An understanding and strong commitment to the goals and philosophy of Odyssey Youth Center.
Personal Requirements
Ability to communicate and respond to youth, co-workers, volunteers and professionals from diverse backgrounds while functioning in a supportive, non-judgmental way. Must understand and comply with all boundary and confidentiality requirements of Odyssey Youth Center.
Ability and willingness to provide own transportation for work in a variety of settings throughout the Inland Northwest during flexible hours. Must posses and maintain a valid driver’s license, automobile liability insurance and a good driving record. Must pass a state background check.
Capable of maintaining independent work schedule without close supervision while balancing other required duties. Ability to work as an effective team member.
