Here's the thing. I've been mobbed by panhandlers lately. To the point where I've really started to feel bad that I don't have any cash for them. (Ok that's not the thing, it is a preamble.) tonight after leaving Red Robin (we had a gift certificate) as we were leaving we were approached by a woman who was asking for money to go to McDonalds. Long story short V. is a twice married woman who left Pheonix the day before her current soon-to-be-ex-husband was to be released from jail with her 7 year old daughter and 15 year old son. They Greyhound bussed it up to Spo-vegas and are staying in a local dive hotel (currently on a Catholic Charities voucher) while she waits for a room to open up at a local shelter (which she was told should be relatively soon, she could have gotten into Anna Ogden Hall but couldn't because her son is too old. She's got no car and so is pretty much stuck in the downtown area. She's already in touch with Lutheran mumble mumble Services and Catholic charities but needs help getting to a food bank, etc. in the mean time. What services are out there that I might be able to point her towards? She's got my cell phone number and I told her to call me back later in the week and that I would hopefully be able to give her some more contact information and hopefully a ride to the food bank if my work schedule permits. That's dealio, I'm hoping she gets back in touch and that I've got some leads for her to work with. She doesn't know this town at all. Her grandfather was born here and she thought it would be fuck-all distant from Arizona.

Oooh. Have her call the Women's Hearth or drop in there, they can coordinate services for her. 509-455-4249. Ideally she would just go in and introduce herself. It is at 920 W. 2nd - Link: http://www.help4women.com/whearth.html

Thing is, it is an all woman space, no kids. So if she goes in she should have the kids hang out somewhere, if she calls she should ask for an appointment with a social worker.

Wish her luck from me!

OH and of course PVCC has food bank and soup kitchen and free clothes on Fridays. People start lining up early so I would have her be there by 11.
